The Waimea Consort, an a cappella vocal ensemble of 12 singers, has
been formed in January 1999 to bring rarely heard vocal music to the Big
Island. Concerts in Waimea, Hilo and Honolulu allowed many to discover
medieval, baroque, and 20th century a cappella music. Each of its last
concerts in Waimea in October and December 2001 attracted more than 120
people for very well received performances.
The first half of the concert is devoted to sacred music. The opening will bring the Kyrie of the Missa pro Defunctis (Mass for the Dead) by Johannes Ockeghem, one of the most influential composers of the early Renaissance. It will be followed by a 15th Century exquisite five-voice polyphony, La deploration de la Mort de Johannes Ockeghem (Deploration on the death of Ockeghem), written by Josquin des Prez, one of Ockeghem's friends and fellow composer. The Mass for Three Voices, composed by William Byrd (1543-1623), the leading composer of his generation, will close this sacred music part with a very simple and concise setting of the latin mass close to the classical settings found two centuries later. Two English madrigals in a happy mood (by the same Byrd and Thomas Weelkes) and a Napolitan song from 1550 will open the second part of the concert and serve as an introduction to the Lagrime d'Amante al Sepolcro dell'Amata, a five-voice madrigal by Claudio Monteverdi depicting the tears of Glauco at the tomb of Corinna, his deceased loved one: A very emotional piece from the 6th Book of Madrigals, where is also found the Lamento d'Arianna performed by the Consort two seasons ago. If you love vocal music, come to the 2002 Fall Concert of the Waimea Consort. You should not regret it, and it is even worth an up-hill drive to Waimea from either side of the Island...
Concert is free, and starts at 7:30 p.m. at HPA's upper campus chapel. For more information, you can contact the Waimea Consort's Director, Christian Veillet, at 885-3161 (veillet@cfht.hawaii.edu), or visit the Consort's web site at http://www.cfht.hawaii.edu/~veillet/choir.html
